Game summary.
Character wiki.

Eleanor was a young girl when her mother was killed by a Daemon that attacked her village. She was content to spend her life in mourning as a nun until the Opening, an event that enabled everyone to see and interact with Malakhim. Born with a naturally high resonance, Eleanor joined the Abbey, a group of Exorcists that worked to exterminate Daemons and make the world a better place. Here, she was given the rank of Praetor.

The first time the party sees Eleanor is outside the snowy town of Beardsley. Here, Eleanor is on patrol, working to keep Daemons away from the town. However, she knows that when she leaves, the town will lose it's protection, and begins to cry. This earns her the title of 'crybaby Exorcist.' The party encounters Eleanor several more times, each one when she's helping the Abbey.

Eleanor first 'joins' with Velvet's group after they confront Artorius at the Empyrean's Throne. Laphicet opens an Earthpulse point, and Eleanor follows Velvet's group in to prevent them from escaping. However, Laphicet extended too much power when opening the Earthpulse, and Eleanor agrees to become his vessel so that the party can leave the Earthpulse. Here, she makes a deal with Velvet; the two will have a one-on-one fight. If Eleanor wins, than she has the right to kill Velvet. If Velvet wins, than Eleanor has to obey Velvet (and thus continue being Laphicet's vessel) until the day that she dies.

The two fight outside of some ruins, and Eleanor loses. Upon defeat, she tries to kill herself to stop from doing Velvet's bidding, but Laphicet (whom she's still the vessel of) stops her and she collapses. After this, she travels with the party, albeit reluctantly at first. During this time, she's still working as an agent for the Abbey, under specific orders to deliver Laphicet to their headquarters. However, over time, she slowly begins to trust the party, and decides not to take Laphicet to the Abbey when given the chance. She announces to the party that she was in league with the Abbey and spying on them, but had chosen to stop, as she decided that their ideals were more worth following.

When the group is in a town called Haria, she kills a Daemon, thinking that it's attacked a child. However, it's later revealed that the Daemon was still aware, and was working to help her child, who had since become a Therion. The party takes the Therion, Kamoana, with them, and Eleanor stands in as an older sister to her.

Eventually, the party comes across the Daemon that killed Eleanor's family. Eleanor, who had been suppressing her malevolence, goes all out against the Daemon, and it's revealed that in addition to seeking revenge, she felt immense guilt over killing Kamoana's mother. The party consoles her, and she pledges to continue on, presumably in keeping with her mother's last wish.

After the party defeats Artorius for the final time, she travels the land, helping to rebuild villages that were hurt during the battles with the Daemons.

Personality: Eleanor's most defining trait is her compassion. When the party first sees her, she's so overcome at the Abbey's inability to help everyone (and thus leave people in danger of Daemon attacks), that she begins crying. Even her initial reason for joining the Abbey stemmed from this compassion: She lost her mother at a young age, and using her newfound power, wanted to help other girls avoid the same fate.

Despite this compassion, however, Eleanor can be very stubborn, and often have a one-track mind. At the beginning of the game, she held steadfast to the Abbey's ideals, and believed that Malakhim were just tools and that Daemon were incapable of feeling. This caused her to be very rough and unforgiving to the party (and others) for a large portion of the game. Believing that what she was taught was the one and only truth, she freely scorned Daemons, and went so far as to kill Mahina, Kamoana's mother, because she saw her as a threat. She was also very skeptical of anything that went against what she believed to be true, questioning Velvet when she claimed that Eleanor's hero, Artorius, had once killed his own family.

*REVISIONS*
When Eleanor first clashes with the party, it's largely because of different objectives. For example, the first time she 'fights' Velvet, she's defending Teresa. The second time, it's because she was on patrol when Velvet and co. attacked a storehouse full of medicine. However, despite these initial encounters being largely reminiscent of Eleanor being in the wrong place at the wrong time, they also help to highlight the ideals that Eleanor has at the beginning of the game.

Eleanor joined the Abbey to help people, but in doing so, almost fell victim to their ideology. The Abbey's ideals can best be described as "Reason over emotion," and many members of the Abbey have committed atrocities (e.g. Artorius killing Laphicet) in the name of these ideals. Although Eleanor was often weighted down by her compassion, she repressed these feelings. When she's found crying outside of Beardsley, she relents that logic dictates this is the way it has to be, that the Abbey's forces aren't enough to help everyone, so some have to be 'left behind' (even if the reason they're being left behind is because they disagreed with the Abbey).

As an extension of this "Reason above all else" mentality, Eleanor also has a very black and white worldview at the beginning of the game: Daemons are always evil, Malakhim have no free will, and the Abbey is always good because it fights the Daemons. Because the Abbey is always good and Daemons are always evil, early game Eleanor blindly trusts the Abbey, not questioning her orders. There's a large bit of tension when she first joins the party, as she repeatedly insists that Velvet and Rokurou can't feel emotions past that of rage and hate, and can't do more than destroy. She defends Teresa because Teresa is with the Abbey, and the Abbey is good (even though they were occupying the nearby areas), she fights Velvet after the storehouse fire, because the Abbey told her to protect the storehouse (even though the substance inside is highly addictive and ruining people's lives). What the Abbey says, she does, because the Abbey is always right.

However, she begins to shift over the course of the game, and the event that spurns this on is the killing of Mahina, Kamoana's mother. Mahina had turned into a Daemon, and because she is a Daemon, Eleanor kills her. However, it's later revealed that Mahina likely had some sentience, and was helping her daughter. Distraught at the revelation that Eleanor took Kamoana's mother away from her, she begins to change, realizing that it's precisely because she never questioned the Abbey or the black and white mentality that the incident happened.

Over time, she stops blindly believing in the Abbey, and decides to take in each situation and make her own judgement. She begins to realize that there are shades of grey, and over time, sees her travelling companions not as Daemons and Malakhim with the inability to feel, but rather as other complete beings with the full spectrum of emotions, whose lives have value. In a late-game skit with a priest, she pledges not to blindly seek forgiveness from the gods, as that would only be repeating her past mistakes. Rather, she pledges to do her best and make her own decisions moving forward.

Although Eleanor at the end of the game still has a place for reason in her heart, she no longer holds it above everything else. Rather, she appreciates and respects that emotions and the freedom to choose (even if the choice may lead to a bad outcome) is important, and recognizes the value of having hope. Her endgame trophy, "Hope Surpassing Reason", is evident of this.

*CUT CONTENT*

Eleanor is a very passionate person, and fully commits to everything that she does. For Eleanor, there's no reason to do something if you're going to attempt to do it halfway. Because of this, she's not only a strong fighter, but also very intelligent, and can often one-up Eizen (the resident nerd) when it comes to knowledge of history. As a consequence of this, she comes off as very serious, and occasionally gets frustrated at the party's antics. She's also very easily flustered, and is a frequent trolling victim of other members of the party.

Part of her being so easily flustered stems from how earnest she is. Hand-in-hand with being compassionate, Eleanor is a very straightforward person. She believes in helping other people and making the world a better place. She doesn't like to like, and isn't very good at it. Although she spends part of the time she's with the party spying on them, she eventually decides that their cause is more worth fighting for than Artorius'. At this time, she comes clean, and admit what she's been doing to the party--only to have them respond that they knew all along.

Despite all of her positive qualities, Eleanor has a habit of repressing her negative feelings. Although she said repeatedly that she doesn't think about the Daemon that killed her mother and that the past was behind her, she broke out in a rage when attacking it. It's partly because of this that she harbored malevolence; not only did she seek vengeance against the Daemon that killed her mother, but she also feared that Kamoana would one day seek vengeance against her, and felt that she was no better than a Daemon. Ultimately, with the support of the party she was able to overcome this, and she was able to use her empathy to talk Kamoana down from a rampage.

Third-Person Sample:
Eleanor shot a glare at Bienpo. When she first met the moogle, she was perturbed; it seemed a very unlikely coincidence that her companion here would have a name so similar to a Malak she was once bound to at home. At the time, she brushed the concerns off.

She wished she hadn't.

Eleanor could have spent today in any number of ways that were productive. Instead, she was now standing outside the gates to Trano Golsaucia, giving Bienpo a look that could only be described as exasperated. Bienpo, buzzing around Eleanor happily, didn't seem to take note of this.

"Well, kupopo, what do you think?"

Eleanor sighed, shaking her head. "Bienpo, we've been here before. You said this was urgent. What are we doing here?"

Bienpo flew around Eleanor happily once more, before gesturing to the city gates, "It is urgent, kupopo! Somebody has to help everyone in Trano Golsaucia make a living!"

"I see, that's why you were so insistent," Eleanor buried her face in her hand. Of course, she should have seen this coming, Bienpo would never get this excited about doing real work. "Bienpo, the calamity is approaching. We can't afford to be wasting time like this."

"I know, but everyone needs a break, kupopo!"

Eleanor sighed again. Bienpo could be like a child at times, and it was clear that she wasn't getting out of this one, especially when they were already here. "Fine, we'll go in. But we're going in as Heroes of Light, do you understand? We're going to see if the townspeople need help."

Mognet Sample:
Dear Fellow Heroes of Light,

It's come to my attention that there's been an unusually high number of crimes in Aqures Ixen over the last few weeks. As heroes of light, we've pledged to defend the city from external threats, such as monsters and the calamity. However, I feel that it's our responsibility to use our powers to help civilians, no matter what the problem may be.

To this end, I would like to organize a small task force of heroes of light to form a neighborhood watch and patrol the city. This watch would rely on volunteers.

I'll be holding a meeting at Cuppa Kupo on Saturday, for anyone who is interested.

I look forward to seeing you there,

Eleanor Hume
